Spirit Fish August 6th, 2010
Still Moon had a wonderful day in Steveston on August 6th. We spent the afternoon folding origami boats and cranes and talking with people about World Peace Day; Hiroshima 66 years ago, prayers for world peace and world water peace. Our first family of many many families happened to be Japanese and they really appreciated the opportunity for their children. Fortunately for us they were able to remind us how to fold paper cranes. Cranes are traditional to fold as a prayer for healing. Ground Zero in Hiroshima is a beautiful park and all the trees are laden with clusters of 1,000 cranes that have been folded as prayers for peace. The hope is that no one else will ever suffer the horrors of a nuclear bomb. We also added folding origami boats as prayer for World Water Peace!
At 6:00pm we were treated to Taiko Drumming outside the cannery and afterwards there was a musical concert about the sea by the Fraser Union. Once the concert had finished we paraded to Gary Point Park with live music including an accordion, drums, and a double bass rolled on a skateboard. We were also accompanied by stiltwalker Crystal, poi spinner Clara, and the magical ‘fish out of water.’
Once at the park we waited for sunset and then we defied the wind and the waves and floated our ‘prayers for the water and world peace’ in the bay. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported the event.
The Spirit Fish Project is an art and watershed awareness project by Still Moon Arts Society with the support of BC Arts Council, The Gulf of Georgia Cannery and numerous community partners. We aim to connect communities to the water we use and show how water travels from our backyards through streams and rivers to the oceans. Water is the circulatory system of the earth and we want to celebrate it and all the living creatures whose very lives depend upon it.
